Controlling pests and diseases

Integrated pest management research aims to maintain productivity and quality by appropriate control of pests and diseases. Strategies include pest detection and monitoring systems, new control methods and pesticide resistance management.

Developing resistant and tolerant plants is international best practice for sustainable crop production. Our research includes characterisation of disease/pest resistance, analysis of pathogenic variation, introgression of resistance from related species, and breeding pest and disease resistant cultivars.

Postharvest pest control is required to meet export standards. We are developing effective products and delivery systems to eliminate pests from export produce before shipment. Our aim is to improve market access and provide replacement products for the ozone depleting fumigant, methyl bromide.
